A Filipino was among 10 Asian women rescued by police in a series of pre-dawn raids in suspected brothels in Gudaibiya, Bahrain on Monday. Six men were arrested in the raid. Another Filipino woman reported after escaping that they were forced to have sex with men in rooftop flats in the area. Gudaibiya is a place in Manama, Bahrain where a large number of Filipinos, Indians and Pakistanis reside. Philippine labor attaché Alejandro Santos said the raids were conducted following a tip off from the Philippine Embassy. "On Saturday night, at about 11.30pm, a Filipino woman was brought to the embassy's shelter in Zinj by members of the community," Santos said. "This woman said she had escaped from this flat in Gudaibiya, where she was forced for days to have sex with different men. She managed to run away and was able to get help from some members of our community," Santos said. The names of the women were withheld for their protection. The Gulf Daily News reported Tuesday that the rescued Filipina, about 20 years old, was “battered and bleeding" while giving her statement at the Gudaibiya police station. The others rescued include four Bangladeshis, a Sri Lankan, and other Asians. GDN said the women were locked indoors and severely beaten when they refused to have sex with customers. One of the women narrated how two customers took turns raping her, with one holding her down while the other "completed his business". The men arrested, whose nationalities were not officially disclosed, were said to include the women's "main pimp". The brothels were reportedly run by a Bangladeshi who had often preyed on Asian women in and around the Gudaibiya area. "This man approaches women who he thinks look lost or on their own in certain places around the area," the GDN report said. "The women he has are mostly runaway housemaids." According to the report, the Bangladeshi took his victims to his flats and promised to help them find new jobs. They ended up becoming prostitutes and the man did not share his earnings from customers who pay for sex with the women. - GMANews.TV
