Help make Chicago best city in the world, mayor urges Fil-Ams


The Mayor of Chicago, Illinois has proclaimed June 12 as Philippine Independence Day in the city in recognition of the contributions Filipino-Americans there, even as he urged the Filipino community to help transform Chicago as "the best city in the world." Consul General Blesilda Cabrera of the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago, reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday that Mayor Richard M. Daley urged the people of Chicago to appreciate what Filipino immigrants have made for the city. Cabrera said she thanked Mayor Daley for his support and friendship for the Filipino community, citing the many important, meaningful, and lasting contributions of Filipino immigrants to American society. At the reception held at the embassy on June 7, Mayor Daley cited that for more than 100 years, Filipino immigrants have played a major role in strengthening the cultural diversity, economic vitality and global presence of Chicago. He noted the Filipinos' strong family values and commitment to quality education. He said he looks forward to continue working together with the Filipino community to make Chicago “the best city in the world." Mayor Daley presented Certificates of Appreciation to three Filipino-Americans: Dr. Virgilio Jonson, Ms. Angeles Carandang and Mr. Sam Castagña for their leadership in making Chicago a better place to live, work and raise a family. In appreciation, the Filipino community presented Mayor Daley with a painting depicting a countryside scene in the Philippines. - GMANews.TV
