US Embassy: Wala kaming base militar sa Mindanao

Pinabulaanan ng US Embassy sa Maynila ang napaulat na may military bases ang Estados Unidos sa Mindanao. Kasabay nito ang pagsasabi na may pansamantalang istruktura na ipinagawa para sa kanilang mga bumibisitang sundalo sa ilang lugar sa Mindanao. “I can state categorically that US has no bases in the Philippines and is not building any," ayon kay Lee McClenny, US Embassy counselor for public affairs nitong Lunes. Bawal sa kasalukuyang Saligang Batas ang pagkakaroon ng anumang permanenteng base militar ang mga dayuhan sa bansa. Sinabi ng grupong Focus on the Global South mula sa Bangkok na nagtatayo ng military installations ang US sa Jolo, Tawi-Tawi at Maguindanao. Itinanggi na rin ito ng mga opisyal ng Pilipinas. Ayon sa US Embassy, ang mga istruktura ay para sa "medical, logistical and administrative services" ng mga sundalong Amerikano. Iginiit ni McClenny na ang mga ipinadalang sundalo ng US sa Zamboanga at Jolo ay gumamit ng pasilidad ng AFP noong nasa Mindanao pa sila. Isa pang opisyal ng US Embassy ang nagsabing may pahintulot ng gobyerno ng Pilipinas ang pananatili ng mga Amerikanong sundalo doon. "It has to do with support of military projects. There are absolutely no permanent facilities," ayon kay Karen Schinnerer, US Embassy deputy press attaché. “US personnel (are) only present where the government of the Republic of the Philippines invites us. We ensure that we take care of our own expenses so our presence is a help, not a burden, for our AFP partners," dagdag ni McClenny. Ayon sa Focus on the Global South, noong June 6, 2007, binigyan ng $14.4-million contract ng US Naval Facilities Engineering Command (Navfac) ang Global Contingency Services LLC of Irving, Texas para sa “operations support" ng Joint Special Operations Task Force- Philippines (Jsotf-P). Ang Jsotf-P ay nakatalaga sa Mindanao noon pang 2002 at tumutulong sa training at intelligence ng AFP. Idinagdag nito na ang Jsotf-P “is involved in the Philippine military’s operations in the South, and represents the new low-profile kind of overseas presence that the US has been striving to introduce as part of its comprehensive restructuring of its forward-deployment since 2001." “This restructuring would see fewer permanent bases and more, smaller bases such as the JSOTF-P’s presence in Zamboanga and in other places in Mindanao," ayon sa grupo. - GMANews.TV
