12 killed in Peru bus crash

LIMA, Peru - Two buses crashed head-on in Peru's southern Andes, killing 12 people, including one American tourist, authorities said. The accident occurred late Tuesday on a highway between the cities of Cuzco and Puno when one of the vehicles swerved to avoid a water truck stopped on the highway. Among the dead were an American, a Bolivian and another foreigner whose identity was still being confirmed, according to police in Cuzco, 350 miles southeast of the capital Lima. The American's identity was not immediately released. Nearly 50 people were injured, police said. Buses in Peru often are poorly maintained, and drivers frequently speed and pass each other on blind mountain curves. -AP
