Xi hopes Chinese community in US will contribute more to Sino-American friendship

Chinese President Xi Jinping voiced hopes on Wednesday in Seattle that the overseas Chinese in the United States and Chinese-Americans can contribute more to the Sino-American friendship.

"Tears swim in eyes when fellow-countrymen meet each other. I am very glad to get together with my overseas Chinese and Chinese-Americans here in the beautiful Seattle. The Mid-Autumn Festival will arrive in a few days, and 'People always become extremely homesick when festivals come'. I know that everyone here misses our homeland and relatives who are tens of thousands of miles faraway, who also care for all of you. On behalf of our country as well as the 1.3 billion fellow countrymen, I here express to you, and also to all the fellow countrymen working and living in the United States and Chinese-Americans via you, my sincere regards and best wishes! I also would like to express my sincere gratitude for the efforts you have made for our current visit," Xi said at a reception hosted by overseas Chinese and Chinese Americans.

Xi praised the unremitting efforts of the overseas Chinese and Chinese Americans to advance the relations between China and the United States since the two countries forged diplomatic ties over three decades ago.

The president expressed wishes that they can actively integrate themselves into the U.S. mainstream society, abide by local laws, respect local customs, get along well with people of other races and help promote the social and economic development of local communities.

He said he hopes they will help boost China-U.S. cooperation and lend positive momentum to the bilateral relations.

In addition, he said he hoped they will popularize the Chinese culture, deepen American people's understanding about China and consolidate public support for bilateral ties.

He said that the China-U.S. relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations in the world, and that the two sides will make their "cake of common interests" bigger and bigger so as to bring more benefits to the peoples of the two countries.

The president also briefed the overseas Chinese about domestic situation, saying that Chinese people are now closer to the goal of achieving great national rejuvenation than in any period in history.

"I believe the overseas Chinese in the United States and Chinese-Americans can surely make unique contributions to this great process," he stressed.  — Reuters
