Julian may reach peak intensity; Habagat to bring rains over parts of Luzon

State weather bureau PAGASA said Typhoon Julian (international name: Maysak) may reach its peak intensity between Monday night and Tuesday morning while the Southwest Monsoon will bring light to heavy rains over some parts of Luzon.

It added that the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat will bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over the northern Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands on Monday.

“Julian is forecast to move north-northwestward or northwestward today and will remain far from the Philippine landmass,” PAGASA said in an 11 a.m. advisory.

“It is forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and pass between the Miyako and Okinawa Islands in the Ryukyu archipelago (southern Japan) tonight or tomorrow early morning,” it added.

PAGASA advised concerned public and disaster risk reduction and management offices to monitor the updates issued by PAGASA Regional Services Divisions and take appropriate measures.

A gale warning is still up over the seaboards of Batanes and Babuyan Islands, as sea travel is risky due to rough to very rough seas (2.8 to 4.5 m), according to PAGASA.

Moderate to rough seas (1.2 to 3.4 m) are expected over the seaboards of the rest of Luzon and Visayas due to the Habagat and Julian.

“Those with small seacrafts are advised to take precautionary measures while venturing out to sea,” PAGASA said.

At 10 a.m., Julian was located at 710 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 150 km per hour and gustiness of up to 185 km/h, moving northwestward at 30 km/h, according to PAGASA. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
