PAGASA: Dante to make landfall over Eastern Samar Tuesday night


Tropical storm Dante is about to make landfall over the northern portion of Eastern Samar, PAGASA said Tuesday evening.

According to the 8 p.m. severe weather bulletin, Dante is expected to make its first landfall over Eastern Samar between 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

It will then traverse over the eastern portion of Northern Samar and emerge over the coastal waters of Northern Samar before making a second landfall over Sorsogon or Rapu Rapu Island.

As of 7 p.m., the center of Dante was estimated at 55 kilometers east-northeast of Borngan City, Eastern Samar with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

It is moving northwestward at 30 kph.

Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 was raised over:

  • The southern portion of Quezon (Calauag, Tagkawayan, Guinayangan, Lopez, Buenavista, Catanauan, San Narciso, Mulanay, San Andres, San Francisco, General Luna, Gumaca, Macalelon, Pitogo, Quezon)
  • Catanduanes
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Masbate including Ticao and Burias Island
  • Albay
  • Sorsogon
  • Eastern Samar
  • Samar
  • Northern Samar
  • Biliran
  • The northeastern portion of Leyte (Carigara, Barugo, San Miguel, Babatngon, Tacloban City, Alangalang, Tunga, Santa Fe, Palo)

The following areas are under TCWS No. 1:

PAGASA said Dante may weaken into a tropical depression on Thursday.

The next severe weather bulletin will be issued at 11 p.m.

Hazards affecting land areas

From Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning, Dante is expected to bring moderate to heavy with, at times, intense rains over Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Masbate, and Romblon.

Moderate to heavy rains are also expected over Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Camiguin, Samar, Bohol, the northern portion of Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, Capiz, Iloilo, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Marinduque, and the southern portion of Quezon.

Meanwhile, Misamis Oriental, Agusan del Sur, Bukidnon, Catanduanes, and the rest of Visayas may experience light to moderate with, at times, heavy rains.

PAGASA warned that flash floods and landslides are highly likely.

Hazards affecting coastal waters

In the next 24 hours, rough to very rough seas will be experienced over the seaboards of areas under TCWS No. 2 and the eastern seaboard of Caraga.
PAGASA said sea travel is risky for small seacrafts.

Meanwhile, moderate to rough seas are expected over the seaboards of Davao Oriental and the remaining seaboards of areas under TCWS No. 1

Mariners of small seacrafts were advised to take precautionary measures while inexperienced mariners were advised to avoid sea voyage.

Red rainfall warning

A red rainfall warning has been raised over Cebu, Bohol and Southern Leyte due to tropical storm Dante, PAGASA said Tuesday evening.

According to PAGASA, serious flooding is expected in low-lying areas and landslides are expected in mountainous areas under this level.

The weather agency also raised an orange warning level over Siquijor and Negros Oriental.

Under this level, flooding and landslides are threatening in low-lying areas and mountainous areas.

Meanwhile, a yellow warning level was raised over Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, and the Biliran Islands.
