Expect temperatures to drop as low as 7.9°C this Amihan season — PAGASA

Expect cooler days ahead until early next year as temperatures could drop to 7.9°C this Amihan season, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Monday.

“Mas bababa pa po ang ating temperature, so mas lalamig pa po sa mga susunod na weeks and months," PAGASA Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section chief Ana Liza Solis. said.

"Around between 11.4°C to 14.3°C po yung lowest temperature na forecasted ng PAGASA ngayong December. And then between 7.9°C to 11.8 °C ‘yan po ‘yung mga possible na mga lowest temperature na fino-forecast ng PAGASA mula January up to February 2026,” she added.

(Our temperature will drop even lower. So it will get even colder in the coming weeks and months. So around between 11.4°C to 14.3°C is the lowest temperature forecasted by PAGASA this December. And then between 7.9°C to 11.8 °C, those are the possible lowest temperatures that PAGASA is forecasting from January up to February 2026.)

The onset of Amihan or the Northeast Monsoon season was declared in late October and it officially began in the third week of November, with cold and dry air expected in most parts of the country.

On Sunday, PAGASA also recorded the lowest temperature for the day of 13.6°C in Baguio City. It was followed by 18.2°C in Casiguran, Aurora, and 19.5°C in Tanay, Rizal.

PAGASA explained that Amihan is expected to peak by January to February next year.

“So actually ay umpisa pa lang ito ng paglamig ng ating Amihan. So usually po kasi ang peak season ng ating Amihan ay January at February, doon po talaga natin mas naitatala ‘yung pinakamababa na temperatura,” said Solis.

(So actually, this is just the start of the cooling of our Amihan. Because usually, the peak season of our Amihan is January and February,  that is when we truly record the lowest temperatures.)

The state weather bureau also warned of frost formation in mountainous areas in Luzon, particularly in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

“Kailangan pa rin po mag-ingat ‘yung ating mga kababayan, lalong lalo na diyan sa mountainous areas ng Luzon, diyan sa may CAR, kasi possible po ang formation ng mga frost so posibleng makapekto sa kanilang pananim,” said Solis.

(Everyone still need to be careful, especially in the mountainous areas of Luzon, there in CAR , because the formation of frost is possible, so it could potentially affect their crops.) — LA, GMA Integrated News
