A “danger level” heat index is expected in Sangley Point, Cavite on Tuesday, April 21, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin on April 20, PAGASA said synoptic stations in Sangley Point, Cavite City may record a heat index of 43°C.

The heat index reflects how hot it feels to the human body by factoring in humidity in addition to actual air temperature.

PAGASA classifies areas with a heat index of 42°C to 51°C under the “danger” category, which poses a risk of heat stroke.

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat may lead to an increase in body temperature and strain vital organs such as the heart and kidneys.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also notes that extreme heat can worsen existing health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, and diabetes.—MCG, GMA News
