Habagat rains to persist until next week —PAGASA

The enhanced Southwest Monsoon or Habagat will bring cloudy to overcast skies and frequent rains over the next week, the state weather bureau PAGASA said Wednesday.

Parts of Luzon are currently experiencing rainfall due to Tropical Storm Maymay, which is expected to make landfall in La Union or Ilocos Sur by Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Meanwhile, Typhoon Dolphin is expected to simultaneously linger on the boundary of PAR.

In a Super Radyo dzBB interview, PAGASA weather specialist Charmagne Varilla advised the public to brace for prolonged rainfall.

Varilla said that while Dolphin is unlikely to make landfall, it will intensify the Southwest Monsoon. Dolphin is currently 1660 kilometers east northeast of extreme northern Luzon.

“Kahit malusaw o humina na si Maymay, magiging tuloy-tuloy pa rin ang habagat natin all throughout the week, up until next week,” Varilla said.

(Even if Maymay dissipates or weakens, the southwest monsoon will continue all throughout the week, up until next week.)

Meanwhile, Maymay is still expected to dump rains as it crosses northern Luzon, Varilla said.

A red rainfall warning is possible over parts of La Union, Benguet and Ilocos Sur, while PAGASA may issue an orange rainfall warning. The rest of Central Luzon, including Metro Manila, could expect a yellow rainfall warning.

Varilla said that Maymay is expected to pass through high areas, so landslides are possible. —LDF, GMA News
