More rain forecast for third week of August 2026 —PAGASA

Don't put away your umbrellas and other rain gear yet, as the inclement weather will persist next week, PAGASA said Thursday.

“Inaasahan na magpapatuloy ito hanggang sa susunod na linggo [Expect the rain to continue next week],” PAGASA Weather Specialist Lorie Dela Cruz told GMA News Online in a phone interview.

She said the continuous rain that started last week is due to the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) intensified by tropical cyclone Luis.

“Hindi pa naman ito malalang na ulan, pero nagsimula ito around Tuesday [last week]. Nag-start na ang mga rains due to Habagat dahil sa bagyo na si Luis na-enhance niya. Then yun halos tuloy-tuloy na siya,” Dela Cruz explained.

(It’s not heavy rain yet, but it started around Tuesday last week. The rains began due to the enhanced Southwest Monsoon, which was intensified by Typhoon Luis. Since then, the rain has persisted.)

From 8 a.m. on Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday, PAGASA Science Garden recorded 63.5 millimeters of rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) PAGASA synoptic station logged 53.5 millimeters of rainfall during the same period.

The continuous rains that poured over Metro Manila and other areas prompted thousands to evacuate.

Around 5,200 residents were staying in evacuation centers in Quezon City and around 837 individuals in the City of Manila.

This week, the Redemptorist Water Channel along the Baclaran River went viral after tons of garbage were seen floating following the torrential rain in Metro Manila.

As a move to address the growing waste in landfills and the energy crisis, the Marcos administration is working to establish waste-to-energy facilities.

According to the United States Energy Information Administration, waste-to-energy plants burn garbage to produce steam, which will be used to power an electric generator turbine. — BM, GMA News
