A road elevation project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Barangay Lasip, Calasiao, Pangasinan is put on hold after residents protested.

The project covers Purok 1 and Purok 2.

The residents said their houses would sink, especially during the rainy season, if the project, which will elevate the road up to two meters, would push through.

"Mataas na 'yun. Kawawa mga bahay dito kapag ganun ka-taas kasi malalim ang tubig dito," said Oscar Tana, a resident.

The barangay council itself opposed the two-meter elevation.

"Lubog lahat ito kapag ginawa 'yun kaya nagpatawag ako ng barangay assembly. Dumalo lahat ng kagawad to," said Dante Fernandez, chairman of Barangay Lasip.

A dialogue was then organized, which was participated by the residents, DPWH representatives, and the barangay council.

The DPWH Pangasinan 4th District Engineering Office, which has oversight of the project, eventually decided to elevate only up to 1.3 meters.

“Naka-suspend pala siya kasi nai-request ng mga residente na ibaba ang elevation. So, probably ang target nila by next week ma-start ang project,” said Elizrose Lalas, information officer of DPWH-Pangasinan 4th DEO.
