A new barbering course has been launched at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Naujan District Jail in Oriental Mindoro to help persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) gain skills for reintegration into society.
BJMP MIMAROPA regional information officer Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo said the initiative was introduced in response to the high demand from PDLs, and to give them practicel training for future employment.
“This is part of a broader effort by the BJMP to offer courses that align with PDL’s interests. By participating in these programs, they can learn valuable skills that will improve their chances of finding meaningful work after they leave the jail facility,” Anglo said.
A total of 20 PDLs are currently enrolled in the program, including Anthony (not his real name), who hopes to become a licensed barber.
“I have never had an opportunity like this to set my mind focused on whenever I am released to be career-minded,” he said.
Acting district jail warden Jail Senior Inspector Herman Jose Madrigal said it is important to expand the program and make barbering tools available so former inmates have better employment prospects upon release.
Jail personnel monitor the training sessions closely, given the use of blades and scissors in the course.
