Tricycle drivers in Mangaldan, Pangasinan are cutting back on trips as soaring temperatures and dangerous heat index levels make it harder to work under the sun.

Marcelo Camara, a tricycle driver, said he no longer drives through midday because the heat has become too difficult to endure. Instead, he resumes work later in the afternoon when temperatures are less intense.

“Bawas biyahe ngayon sobrang init talaga, hindi kinakaya,” Camara said.

Other tricycle drivers in the town have also reduced their trips, while some commuters said they have adjusted their travel schedules to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

“Palaging may dalang fan tapos water,” Janet Romero, a commuter, said.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the heat index in Dagupan City has been ranging from 40 to 42 degrees Celsius. On Monday, the heat index reached 46 degrees Celsius.

PAGASA warned that temperatures could rise further as May approaches.

“Mayroong possibility na tataas pa ang heat index, sa ngayon nga nasa katapusan na tayo ng Abril. Itong Mayo, i-observe natin kung lalampasan na ang heat index ngayon,” Engr. Jose Estrada Jr., chief meteorological officer of PAGASA-Dagupan Station, said.

Health authorities continue to urge the public to avoid direct exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to prevent heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

They also advised residents to stay hydrated and limit unnecessary outdoor activities during peak daytime heat.
