Greenpeace Southeast Asia said several of its activists were brought to a police station after staging a peaceful protest during the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu on Friday, May 8, 2026.
In a statement, the group said the protest called on ASEAN leaders to address the region’s plastic crisis and dependence on fossil fuels, while holding polluting corporations accountable.
Greenpeace said communities across Southeast Asia continue to face the effects of landfill collapses, toxic fires, polluted air, and plastic pollution.
As of posting time, the organization said the activists remained at Lapu-Lapu Police Station 2 and had not yet been allowed to leave.
