Thousands of families were affected and several residents were rescued after heavy rains caused flooding in several parts of Mindanao over the weekend.

In Maguindanao del Sur, around 2,797 families from five barangays in Sultan Sa Barongis were affected after floodwaters submerged homes on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), no one was hurt and evacuated.

Some residents were even forced to use boats along the roads in Barangay Bulod due to the flooding.

In Davao City, at least 32 individuals were rescued after they got trapped by sudden flooding in Sitio Pagan, Tamugan, Marilog District.

Based on investigation, police said the individuals were preparing for a cockfight as part of a fiesta celebration when water levels rose quickly.

Rescuers used ropes to save the individuals. They were retrieved successfully after several hours and were given medical assistance.

Meanwhile, the road in Barangay Manarapan, Kapalawan in the Special Geographic Area of Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (SGA-BARMM) has turned into what appears to be a “sea” due to floodwaters overflowing from a creek  caused by heavy rains.

Flooding also hit Cotabato Province.

In Alamada town, motorists were stranded at an overflow bridge due to strong currents. Only large vehicles were able to pass through.

However, some residents still attempted to cross in order to get home while others looked for alternative routes.

Due to continuous rain throughout the night, several areas in Kabacan town were flooded after the Pulangi River overflowed.

The flooding was worsened by a clogged drainage canal caused by garbage. However, the local government immediately conducted desilting and clearing operations.

A landslide was also reported in Barangay Tinimbacan, Banisilian, where a dump truck almost fell into a ravine because of the incident.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the rains were caused by a low pressure area (LPA) still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
