At least 10 people were reported dead after a landslide buried their homes at a remote area in Malapatan, Sarangani dawn on Friday, July 10, 2026.
The victims reportedly belonged to two families from two separate households.
Relatives and rescuers assisted a 31-year-old man down the mountain in Sitio Fandao, Barangay Poblacion, after he was rescued from his home. The man was rushed to a hospital but he did not make it there alive.
Meanwhile, the bodies of other individuals buried in the landslide have also been retrieved. Some of the victims were reportedly children.
According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), the death toll from the landslide has risen to 10, as of Friday, July 10, 2026.
“Ang landslide, dili kaayo lalom kay pag-rescue sa ilaha around 6 o’clock, based sa statement sa purok chairman, nadungog pa niya ang tingog sa ilalom. Mao tong nadala sa ospital pero the rest, nahilom,” Malapatan Mayor Salway Sumbo Jr. said.
The bodies recovered were brought to a funeral home in the town.
MDRRMO said the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck on June 8, 2026, may have contributed to the weakening of the soil in the area.
“Posible ni nga wala ni sila nareport kay dili pud siguro ni basta basta mu landslide nga walay mga tension cracks pero kana gina confirm pa natu,” MDRRM Officer, Mark Christopher Quiño, said.
Because of the incident, the provincial government plans to relocate some families living near the area.
“We already informed the barangay, katong nga sitio pa didto kung kinakailangan, ipa-evacuate sa kay kusog pa man ang ulan,” Sarangani Governor Rogelio Pacquiao said.
Meanwhile, at least 115 families from two barangays in the town were affected by flooding caused by heavy rains.
State weather bureau PAGASA said the southwest monsoon or Habagat, enhanced by #IndayPH, continues to bring rains across Mindanao.
