One died while three others were injured when a van transporting personnel of Pag-IBIG Fund crashed into trees by the road in the northern city of Guihulngan in Negros Oriental.
The incident happened in Barangay Malusay while the vehicle was traveling to the city proper from Guihulngan Heights at past 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
In a post on its Facebook page, the Guihulngan Police said the van’s brakes malfunctioned while the vehicle was navigating downhill in a curved portion of the road.
“According to the statement of the driver, the vehicle allegedly suffered a brake malfunction while negotiating a curved portion of the road approximately one kilometer from its point of origin. Upon realizing the brake failure, the driver immediately alerted the passengers. One passenger reportedly attempted to jump from the vehicle to avoid the impending crash. Moments later, the driver lost control of the van, causing it to collide with a coconut tree and several gmelina trees along the roadside,” reads the Facebook post of the Guihulngan Police.
The driver and two other passengers sustained injuries and were given treatment. One passenger was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
The Guihulngan Police said response efforts were undertaken in coordination with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and medical responders.
“The Guihulngan City Police Station reminds all motorists to always observe BLOWBAGETS before traveling. Check your Battery, Lights, Oil, Water, Brake, Air, Gas, Engine, Tire, and Self to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and you are prepared for the journey,” the station said.
Pag-IBIG Fund is yet to issue a statement, as of this writing.
