A 53-year-old woman in Don Carlos, Bukidnon allegedly poisoned her four-year-old granddaughter and then took the same substance herself.
According to a relative, Jovelyn Alisoso, the incident happened on Thursday, August 13, 2026 in Barangay Bismartz after the old woman figured in yet another argument with her husband.
After her husband left, the old woman allegedly gave her granddaughter milk mixed with zinc phosphide, a substance used commonly as rat poison.
The child reportedly began convulsing shortly after drinking the milk.
The old woman then allegedly ingested the same poison, which led to her death.
Responding officers found the grandmother and her granddaughter unconscious, prompting them to rush the two to the hospital.
Don Carlos Municipal Police Station OIC, Lt. Rufina Bayarcal, said they have yet to get from the hospital official information on the cause of death.
POSSIBLE REASON
Alisoso said the incident shocked them.
“Nakurat gyud mi kay tingala mi nga ni-anhian na lang diri nga wala na sila’y kinabuhi. Ni ana na lang akong uyuan nga nianhi diri nga namatay naning bata natingala mi ngano namatay nga grabe kalagsik mani sila,” Alisoso said.
She said the old woman may no longer was in her proper state of mind.
She would reportedly argue frequently with her husband because of jealousy. The death of her daughter in 2023 also continued to affect her.
Her daughter was the child’s mother. The child, then nine months old in 2023, was the survivor of the brutal killing of her mother.
“Kay ingon niya wala pa gyud daw sya naka-move on sa pagkamatay sa iyang anak unya nagpabadlong pa ang iyang bana,” Alisoso said.
“Sige ra silag away… pagkahuman, nanghipos man daw ang lalaki, nilakaw, nagdala og bag unya ang nabilin paminaw guro niya nga nagdala na og bag biyaan na gyud sila. Mao to nag-inom na lang gyud sila og hilo,” Alisoso added.
The old woman’s husband confirmed to the police that they had an argument prior to the incident.
