DepEd science teachers to undergo training in May and October
The Department of Education has lined up training programs for science high school teachers to boost their skills in English, science and mathematics. DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said this is in line with his department's efforts to prepare teachers for the rollout of the K-12 basic education curriculum. He added that the basic education curriculum "seeks to produce globally competitive and science and technology-oriented graduates.” “It is highly crucial that we raise the level of competencies of our teachers in line with the education reform that we are now pursuing,” he said. DepEd has partnered with the Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS) and the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) to train some 1,530 Grade 7 (First Year High School) teachers of English, Science, and Mathematics from science high schools nationwide. The training is under the Upgrading Program: Learning Institute for Teachers (UPLIFT) project of PSHSS. It will be conducted in two phases in all PSHSS campuses, with the first phase on May 7 to 11 and May 14 to 18. A second phase will be held on October 24 to 28. Participants were encouraged to complete the two phases of the training. Teachers who will undergo the program shall be science high school teachers, preferably those newly hired or those who need improvement in teaching science and coming from municipalities or divisions without or with less SEI scholarship qualifiers. DepEd regional directors are tasked to monitor and evaluate the impact of the training. — ELR, GMA News
