Olympics: PHL archer falls but four more Filipino bets wait in the wings

August 1, 2012 10:41pm
(Updated 10:16am) Mark Javier held his own against team silver medalist Brady Ellison of the United States in the elimination round of the men's individual archery competition at the 2012 London Olympic games Tuesday.

Ellison eventually won the match, 7-1, after grabbing the first, second and fourth sets. Javier and Brady got the same score of 25 in the third set for a tie.

Ellison only held a two point advantage in the first set, 29-27, but it was enough to get the two points. In the second set, Javier had a low seven in his first arrow for a total score of 25 to his opponent's 28.

It got interesting in the third set, as Javier shot a 10 with his third arrow to tie Ellison with 25. In the fourth set, though, the American showed his poise, nailing two tens with his first and third arrow for a 29, while Javier got two sevens with his first two arrows for a 22.

The winner of each set gets two points while the loser gets none. In case of a tie, each player gets one point each.

Even with the loss, it was an impressive showing for Javier, a 30-year-old native of Dumaguete, who stood his ground against his heavily-favored counterpart. Ellison won the silver medal in the team event with the rest of his compatriots last Saturday.  The American is the number one archer in the United States today, and is expected to win gold in the men's individual category.

Lady archer Rachelle Anne Cabral had previously failed to advance against Russian Inna Stepanova.

Other Filipinos out of the running include weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, skeet shooter Paul Brian Rosario, and swimmers Jessie Lacuna and Jasmine Alkhaldi.

Still in contention though is light fly boxer Mark Barriga, who faces Kazakhstan's Birzhan Zhakypov on Saturday, in the round of 16.

Also still on tap are judoka Tomohiko Hoshina (August 3, PHL time), long-jumper Marestella Torres (August 7, PHL time), runner Rene Herrera for the men's 5000m and BMX biker Daniel Caluag (August 8, PHL time). - AMD, GMA News
