State of calamity declared over Tacloban


(Updated 3:51 p.m.) - Tacloban City in Leyte province was placed under a state of calamity on Monday, days after it was devastated by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) last weekend, a report on GMA News TV's Balita Pilipinas said.
 
Tacloban City was one of the areas hit hardest by Yolanda, which devastated parts of the Visayas and Southern Luzon before exiting the Philippines last Saturday.
 
Last Sunday, the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines sent additional personnel to Tacloban City to ensure peace and order there.

Earlier, it was reported that in Medellin town in Cebu, the municipal council held a special session at 10 a.m. Sunday to declare a state of calamity in the area.
 
NDRRMC: Yolanda affects nearly 10M, damage nears P300M
 
Meanwhile, the number of people affected by Yolanda neared the 10-million mark while the damage from the cyclone amounted to P257.508 million as of Monday morning, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.
 
In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC also said the death toll from Yolanda had risen further to 255, with 71 injured and 38 still missing.
 
At least 2,095,262 families or 9,679,059 people in 7,251 villages in 471 towns and 51 cities in 41 provinces were affected.
 
Of these, 128,303 families or 615,774 people were displaced, and 91,657 families or 433,300 people were housed in 1,444 evacuation centers.
 
Damage
 
Damage to property rose to P296,505,629.05, including P38,997,500 in infrastructure and P257,508,129.05 in agriculture.
 
The NDRRMC said 13,473 houses were destroyed while 9,717 were damaged.
 
Power in Marinduque and Baco, Calapan City, Naujan, San Teodoro, Socorro, Victoria, Bansud, Gloria, Mansalay, Pinamalayan and Roxas in Oriental Mindoro has been restored.
 
Also restored was power in Rizal, Sta. Cruz, Mamburao and San Jose in Occidental Mindoro; Odiongan, Ferrol, Looc, Alcantara and San Andres in Romblon; and Mina, Pototan and Aniway in Iloilo. — With a report from Amanda Fernandez/RSJ/KG, GMA News
