Facebook launches free data access app for developing countries
People in developing countries may now have a decent shot at getting basic Internet services—ranging from weather to search and health and education—with a new ambitious app from social networking giant Facebook.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the app, Internet.org, seeks to bring "affordable internet access to everyone in the world," starting with Zambia.
On Thursday, Zuckerberg announced the launch of Internet.org in Zambia, giving people there free data access to basic internet services.
"Over the past year we've been working with mobile operators around the world to deliver on this goal. We're starting to see this vision become a reality, and we've already helped 3 million people access the internet who had no access before," Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page:
"This is a big step forward in achieving the mission of Facebook and Internet.org. We're looking forward to bringing free basic services to more countries soon," he added.
Zuckerberg noted that for now, only 15 percent of people in Zambia have access to the Internet.
"Soon, everyone will be able to use the internet for free to find jobs, get help with reproductive health and other aspects of health, and use tools like Facebook to stay connected with the people they love," he said.
Services
Facebook product management director Guy Rosen said the app allows people to browse "useful health, employment and local information services without data charges."
"By providing free basic services via the app, we hope to bring more people online and help them discover valuable services they might not have otherwise," he said.
Initially, the Internet.org app will be available to Airtel subscribers in Zambia, with Facebook working to roll it out to other parts of the world.
The Internet.org app allows Airtel customers in Zambia to have access to:
- AccuWeather
- Airtel
- eZeLibrary
- Facts for Life
- Google Search
- Go Zambia Jobs
- Kokoliko
- MAMA (Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action)
- Messenger
- Wikipedia
- WRAPP (Women’s Rights App)
