Windows 10 Mobile tweaks Cortana, allows ‘one-handed’ use

Improvements to digital assistant Cortana and the camera, along with a "one-handed use" feature, top the list of changes in Microsoft's latest build of Windows 10 Mobile.

Microsoft's Gabe Aul said the latest build also includes bug fixes and tweaks to the Windows interface.

Aul, in a blog post, said the improvements to Cortana include adjustments to cards in Cortana’s homepage and the hamburger menu, and enabled tracking of flights and packages "so when you get an e-mail with flight or package information from supported providers they show up in the Cortana experience and Cortana will also alert you about them."

He added alerts for going to work, going home and the airport are also enabled again, while users can ask questions to weather, currency information, stock quotes and more.

Photos, camera

The Photos app and camera also get performance and reliability improvements.

Aul also cited the new "One-handed use" feature for devices with screens of 5 inches or greater.

"(I)t’s now easier to use your device with one hand. Press and hold the Start button and your screen will slide down so you can reach items at the top of your screen. To slide the screen back up, tap the black space at the top of the screen, or press and hold the Start button again," he said.

He said the one-handed use feature will time out after several seconds and return to the regular view.

Other changes include:

  • the PIN pad is now transparent and slides up over the Lock screen image instead of displacing it.
  • changes to fonts, icons, and layout, and the UX will feel more complete.

Aul also said Microsoft has fixed the MMS bug in Build 10080, and MMS messages should come in normally.

He said they also fixed an issue where touch will stop responding on the Lock screen, preventing users from swiping up to unlock the phone.

Skype issue

Aul said there is an issue that may cause Skype not to work after upgrade.

He recommended a workaround of uninstalling Skype on Windows Phone 8.1 before upgrading to this build and then reinstall it after upgrading. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
