'Squid Game' wins big at Screen Actors Guild Awards

By Ron Lim

Squid Game continues to have a winning year as it collected three trophies at the Screen Actors Guild Awards held today.

Jung Ho-yeon, who played North Korean defector Sae-byeok in the hit show, won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, while Lee Jung-jae won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Seong Gi-hun.

In his acceptance speech, Lee Jung-jae thanked the “global audience” for the appreciation showered on Squid Game, while Jung Ho-yeon delivered an emotional speech where she thanked the gathered actors who she says she watched growing up.

Aside from the acting awards, the Screen Actors Guild also gave the show the award for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Drama or Comedy Series.

The accolades come after Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk said that he already has the core plotline for Season 2.

This is also the third acting award for Squid Game, as co-star O Yeong-su was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor last month. The show was also given the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series - Longform last November.

The win is especially sweet for Ho-yeon, as Squid Game is her first acting job. Since starring in the series, Ho-yeon has seen her Instagram following increase to 23.4 million as of this writing. She has also become a global ambassador for Louis Vuitton, a full-circle moment for her as she had previously modeled for the luxury brand.

Ho-yeon also managed to nab the February cover of Vogue US. Check out the photos in the gallery below.
