No rivalry between Miss Universe Philippines and Binibining Pilipinas, says Shamcey Supsup

Despite having two separate pageants, Shamcey Supsup said there is no rivalry between the Miss Universe Philippines organization and the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc.

In a press conference on Wednesday at Empire Studios in Bonifacio Global City, Shamcey said the MUP and BPCI can still support each other.

"I don't think it should be a rivalry kasi what's the point of having these pageants?" she said.

"We want to empower. We don't want to look down on others or pull others down," Shamcey added.

She said she has yet to talk to her godmother and BPCI chair Stella Araneta but added the move will not ruin their relationship.

"They're really close to me so I don't think magkakaroon ng lamat 'yong relationship," Shamcey said.

"We're not going to go that low so I hope everyone just support each pageant because we have different directions for every girl," she added.

Shamcey also said she will always be a proud product of the BPCI.

“I always say na I’m still a Binibini. I’m always a Binibini and very grateful for the opportunity the Aranetas have given me and all of us. We would not be here if not for them."

She also hopes Stella can help her and give her advice in her new role as national director.

Shortly after the Miss Universe 2019 competition last December 9, Shamcey was offered the position of national director.

She received a phone call from queen maker Jonas Gaffud about the offer.

Among others considered for the position were Pia Wurtzbach and Venus Raj.

After Shamcey accepted the offer, Miss Universe Philippines announced they are no longer with the Araneta group and Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. after 55 years.

For the first time in pageant history in the country, a separate Miss Universe Philippines competition has opened its applications for aspiring beauty queens. Submission of applications is until January 31, while the final screening will be on February 1.

“We’re not doing this just to have a change or a difference from other pageants but we’re just going to follow kung ano ‘yong magiging direction ng Miss Universe Organization," Shamcey said.

The Miss Universe Philippines will be under the umbrella of the Miss Universe Organization.

The coronation night will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on May 3. —MGP, GMA News
