Miss Universe Philippines Rabiya Mateo: 'Being a woman should be celebrated every day'
International Women's Day is the global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
However, for Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo, "Being a woman should be celebrated everyday."
In a social media post last Tuesday, the beauty queen reminded her followers how far women's rights have gone, thanks to our foremothers.
"Back in the day, us women did not have the right to vote. We did not even have access to education and were prohibited to pursue their own careers," Rabiya wrote.
"Things are different now because we fought for equal rights. Because of the sacrifices of our foremothers, we can be whoever we wanna be in this world," she added.
And so, Rabiya encouraged her fellow women to continue the fight not only to "scrape the glass ceiling," but to "shatter it completely."
"Let us continue to build an equal society with equal rights and opportunities for all genders," she said.
Rabiya Mateo was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2020 last October in Baguio City.
The beauty queen recently received a lot of praise for bravely speaking up on President Rodrigo Duterte's controversial remarks about how women were "not fit for the presidency."
“I am a woman and I believe that my emotions make part in my leadership skills. I have so much heart, I have so much calling in being a leader and I do disagree with this thought. I can lead my country because I have the power to do so,” Rabiya said. —Margaret Claire Layug/JCB, GMA News
