BTS' 'Aliens' tops iTunes charts after group opts out of 2027 Grammys consideration

Following BTS' announcement that they will not submit their music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, the group's song "Aliens" has surged to no. 1 on iTunes charts in dozens of countries around the world, including the US.

The track is part of BTS' latest album, “Arirang,” which explores themes of racism, xenophobia, and embracing one's cultural identity.

In the song, BTS describe themselves as the "seven aliens," using the metaphor to reflect the experience of feeling like outsiders or foreigners. The lyrics also highlight aspects of Korean culture, including the custom of taking off one's shoes before entering a home.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, RM explained that the song's concept evolved from "Endless" into "Aliens," describing it as an anthem about embracing the group's identity as "aliens to those foreigners abroad."

BTS' decision to forgo Grammy submissions came after the Recording Academy announced five new categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance.

The new category has drawn mixed reactions online. While some fans welcomed it as a step toward greater recognition of Asian music, others argued that it could further separate Asian artists from competing in the Grammys' major categories.

Many pointed to BTS' commercially successful album “Arirang” as an example of an Asian act capable of competing alongside the industry's biggest releases.

BTS has notably earned five Grammy nominations in their career.

"Arirang" was released in March, marking BTS's return to the music industry after a four-year hiatus, during which they enlisted in the South Korean military and pursued solo careers.

The album includes the songs “Swim,” “Merry Go Round,” and “Normal.”

In April, they kicked off their biggest world tour yet.
