THANKS FOR ALL THE LIEMPO

Ateneo’s beloved Manang passes on

Life in Ateneo wouldn’t be complete without a meal in Manang’s – the little shack beside the covered courts that served one of the most fulfilling liempo meals one could have.

In July this year, just one month after Ateneo dispelled rumors about Manang’s closing shop, the Jesuit University informed its community that yes, it has closed down after 27 years. Manang's health wasn't as robust, she and her husband wanted to enjoy life in retirement.

Four months after delivering the sad news, Ateneo has more bad news: Purisima “Manang” Rentosa, she of the great liempo recipe, has died on November 6, 2017. She was 81.

“Since 1990, Manang’s has been a beloved fixture in the Ateneo – a place where students, professors, employees, alumni and guests share plates of delectable Filipino meals like grilled liempo, sautéed vegetables with bean sprouts and adobo. It has become an institution, a part of the Ateneo community where everybody knows and looks after each other,” read a a short obituary on Ateneo’s Facebook page.

Manang’s body is available for viewing starting Wednesday, November 8, 2 p.m. at the Premiere A Chapel, Gate 2 of Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina.

Funeral mass is scheduled on November 11 at 9 a.m.

What a sad piece of news. But with all the people Manang has fed and made happy with her delicious liempo...she led a full life, didn't she? — LA, GMA News
