Poblacion's NoKal permanently closes doors

NoKal, a popular haunt on the north side of Kalayaan Avenue (Get it? Get it?) in Makati's hip district of Poblacion, is shuttering down.

On social media Sunday, NoKal thanked its patrons as it explained that "the current pandemic has taken a toll on our business and employees."

"With our business as a bar still not being allowed to operate, and our landlord still demanding full rent payments, we have no choice but to leave the current premises in which our lease is tied unto," it said.

But it did end its farewell in a positive note, saying "we'll be back soon, stronger and better!"

NoKal follows the closure of another Poblacion favorite, Polilya, which announced closure in mid-July.

Businesses are hard-hit by COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns to arrest its spread. Last week, QC establishment Shangri-La Finest Chinese Cuisine and KidZania both cited the pandemic as reason for closure.

In May, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said over 525,000 or 52.66% of MSMEs in the country had to stop operations due to the lockdowns. — LA, GMA News
