'CORONNIALS'

Newborn babies wear tiny face shields amid COVID-19 threat

Babies born in the time of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) will have to navigate a very different world compared to previous generations.

While Millennials and Gen Z wore bibs and cute onesies, newborns in 2020 have to wear personal protective equipment soon after birth.

What should we call these little munchkins? Well, say hello to the "coronnials!"

A portmanteau of "coronavirus" and "millennials," this is the name given to babies born amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Vonne Aquino's report on "24 Oras."

Baby Joselito, one of the many babies born during this health crisis, can be seen wearing a DIY face shield made personally by his own father, Joey Ong.

Joey shared that when his wife and newborn son were about to be discharged from the hospital, they weren't allowed to go to the parking so they had to go past the lobby filled with people.

Worried about this scenario, Joey decided to make his own face shield using a plastic bottle, tissue foam and medical tape.

"I got worried. I thought about it kaya isang oras bago lumabas ng hospital, gawin ko ang DIY face shield para kay baby," he said.

Another baby, Hansuito Emmanuel Banzuelo, can also be found wearing a tiny face shield right after he was born on Saturday, April 11.

According to his mom, Hanie, the face shield was given to them by the University of Santo Tomas hospital as a form of protection right before they went home.

Around the world, babies can also be seen in this protective gear.

Babies born in a hospital in Thailand can be seen wearing cute tiny face shields to protect themselves against COVID-19.

Meanwhile, in Shanghai, a cute baby was found dressed in a protective suit that looked like a space costume.

The space costume was reportedly made by the baby's father so that his child can continue to play amid the ongoing pandemic. --Kaela Malig/MGP, GMA News
