Movies by the bay, anyone? SM Mall of Asia is opening a drive-in cinema this month

After opening a drive-in cinema in Pampanga, SM is bringing the drive-in movie experience to Metro Manila.

SM Cinemas just announced that it is turning the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds (Block 16) into a drive-in movie theater that will be open every Wednesday to Sunday.

According to their announcement, the drive-in movie theater will open next week, on September 9, 2020.

Movie bundles that come with popcorn, bottled water and food are priced at P400.

Much like the drive-in cinema in Pampanga, a maximum of four people per car will be allowed, but two people per vehicle is best.

Malls started turning their grounds to drive-in cinemas after walk-in theaters closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

SM Cinemas first offered the drive-in theater experience at its branch in San Fernando, Pampanga in July.

In case you were wondering how it works, guests would be instructed to switch on their car's FM radio to a specific frequency so the movie's audio will be broadcasted directly into their vehicles.

The SM Pampanga venue was able to accommodate up to 90 vehicles per screening.

Movie-goers were still required to wear masks and stick to the specified maximum number of persons in each car. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
