Olivia Rodrigo explains breaking from 4-letter album titles for 'You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love'
Olivia Rodrigo’s decision to move away from her signature one-word, four-letter album titles reflects both her growth as an artist and a change in creative direction.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, the Filipino-American popstar said that the change for “You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love” came naturally as she entered a new phase in her life and songwriting.
“I think I kind of knew really early on that I sort of wanted to break that mold a little bit. I mean, I'm older now, this is like an album that I made when I was 22, the other albums I made when I was a teenager, and it just sort of felt like a natural progression to just sort of switch things up and just artistically [I] wanted to just do something different,” Olivia said.
Rather than seeing it as a reinvention, the Grammy-winning artist described the shift as part of her artistic growth, pointing out how her perspective has changed since her teenage years.
“I really love the title. I think I set out to make this album and I just wanted to perfect a sad love song because I think all of my favorite love songs are so beautiful because there's an element of yearning or melancholy or fear, and like that's kind of the thing. I think that like grounds it in something real and is why we resonate with those types of songs so much,” she said.
Per Olivia, the final title ultimately clicked as a reflection of the album’s core idea.
“When I found the title I was really excited because I think it just sort of really captured the thesis statement of what I was trying to go for,” she said.
Olivia’s first two albums were named “Sour” and “Guts.”
On Friday, Olivia made her much-awaited music comeback with “Drop Dead,” the first single off of “You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love.”
The full album will come out on June 12.
In 2024, Olivia visited the Philippines for her first concert in the country.
