Closure of Tandang Sora intersection, flyover postponed by 1 week

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is postponing for one week the permanent closure of the Tandang Sora flyover and intersection, following an outcry from local officials and several residents, commuters, and motorists to be affected.

The closure, which is part of  the ongoing construction of the Metro Rail Transit System Line 7 (MRT-7), was initially scheduled to take effect on February 23 (Saturday).

However, Quezon City officials and residents pleaded for more time to prepare for the heavy traffic expected and spread information on the rerouting scheme.

The DOTr officially announced on Thursday that San Miguel Corporation, the private partner for the MRT-7 project, has agreed to a one-week postponement.

Officials see the postponement as a period to "strengthen public awareness and cooperation for the project."

They also said the move would give individuals and agencies "ample time" to prepare and manage the traffic situation.

"While we want the construction of the MRT-7 to proceed as fast as possible, the DOTr also understands that major adjustments have to be made by residents, commuters and motorists who will be affected by the said closure," the DOTr said.

"We appeal for understanding and cooperation from the public as we make all means possible to deliver these projects efficiently," it added. — Margaret Claire Layug/MDM, GMA News
