Bato says police in drug operations should have body cameras

Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa stressed the importance of providing body cameras to drug enforcement operatives to protect them from allegations of killing drug suspects.

According to a Tuesday report on 24 Oras, the senator lamented the lack of body cameras for members of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

PNP officer-in-charge Archie Gamboa vouched for the use of body cameras only during the conduct of actual operations so as not to compromise the case.

The PNP awarded the bid for the P289 million-peso body camera system to a San Juan City-based company last week.

Gamboa cautioned the use of body cameras may also encounter legal issues due to the Data Privacy Act of 2012.

The National Privacy Commission said there will be no issues with the use of body cameras if the footage and data will be used and handled properly. —Julia Mari Ornedo/LDF, GMA News
