COVID-19 death toll in PNP now at 89 as total infections breach 32,000


The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday reported another police officer who died due to COVID-29, bringing the total fatalities within the organization to 89.

In a statement, PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said the latest fatality was a 48-year-old policeman assigned in South Cotabato.

On August 1, the cop was admitted to a hospital after experiencing headache and cough. He underwent a COVID-19 test, which yielded a positive result.

Due to a difficulty of breathing, the PNP said the cop was hooked to oxygen inhalation on August 7.

On August 9, he succumbed to the disease at 3:45 p.m.

Eleazar extended his condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of assistance.

As of Thursday, the PNP has recorded a total of 32,077 COVID-19 cases with 158 new infections among its personnel.

At least 30,147 have already recovered, while 1,841 are still active cases.

On Friday, the PNP confirmed that three cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19 were detected among its personnel.

According to the PNP, at least 72,898 or 32.87 % of its personnel have been fully vaccinated, while 78,544 or 35.41%  have already received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

With this, the PNP said at least 70,341 or 31.72%  of its personnel have not been vaccinated yet. -MDM, GMA News
