6 dead, 93 injured after magnitude 6.3 Mindanao earthquake —NDRRMC


Six people have been confirmed dead while 93 others were injured after the magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck in Mindanao on Wednesday, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Saturday.

Based on its 8 a.m. situational report, the casualties were reported in Regions XI, XII, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

A total of 1,653 families (8,265 people) were also affected in 52 barangays in Regions XI and XII. Fifty-eight families (352 people) are now at evacuation centers, while 547 families (2,673 people) are staying outside evacuation centers.

A fire also hit the Gaisano Mall in General Santos City on Wednesday evening following the earthquake. It was declared under control on 1 p.m. on Thursday, but the fire rekindled at 6:30 p.m.

It was declared fire out at 10:30 p.m.

The NDRRMC also reported 1,699 damaged infrastructures in Regions XI, XII, and BARMM, wherein 329 houses, two health facilities, one public structure and two places of worship have been totally damaged.

Meanwhile, 1,031 houses, 269 schools, 19 health facilities, 23 public structures, six places of worship, 10 private/commercial establishments and seven roads and bridges have been partly damaged.

A total of 39 areas in Regions XI and XII experienced power outages on October 16, before power supply was restored on October 17.

Forty-six areas in Regions XI, XII and BARMM declared suspension of classes and work on October 17.

The municipality of Makilala, Cotabato also declared a state of calamity on Thursday.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development reported it has readied P1,943,054,773.74 worth of stockpiles and standby funds for use in helping affected residents. —Jamil Santos/KG, GMA News
