Around 120 families evacuated in Cagayan town as Ramon brings strong winds, waves to coast

Around 120 families evacuated from their homes as oncoming Typhoon Ramon brought strong winds and waves to the coastal barangays of Santa Ana, Cagayan on Tuesday.

According to a report of Jun Veneracion on GMA News TV’s Balitanghali, Santa Ana Mayor Nelson Robinion said these families, who are living in critical areas, will be advised to return home in the afternoon or by Wednesday morning if the weather turns good.

The effects of Ramon started to be felt on Monday night over the coastal areas of Santa Ana. The typhoon also caused a power outage in the town

For the residents, Ramon is relatively weaker than other tropical cyclones that hit the town.

According to Robinion, no serious damage have been reported so far because the strength of the wind was only felt in coastal areas.

There is no threat of flooding in the area as water levels in rivers and creeks remained safe.

The light rainfall brought by Ramon also poured during a low tide period.

Santa Ana as well as 12 other areas in Cagayan remained under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 on Tuesday morning.

Classes have been canceled in all levels in the whole province.

Meanwhile in Ilocos Norte, where TCWS No. 2 was raised, the local government unit of Pagudpud braced for the onslaught of Ramon, according to a report on GMA News’ Unang Balita on Tuesday.

Mayor Raffy Benemerito said heavy equipment were already deployed in landslide-prone areas. Relief goods were also prepositioned. The local government has been monitoring the water levels of rivers.

According to PAGASA's 2 p.m. bulletin, moderate with frequent heavy rains are expected over Batanes, the northern portion of Cagayan including the Babuyan Islands, Apayao and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
