Ramon seen to make landfall over Babuyan Islands; Signal No. 3 up over northern Cagayan


Weather bureau PAGASA on Tuesday said Typhoon Ramon continued to increase its threat over Babuyan Islands, where it is seen to make its landfall.

In its 11 a.m. severe weather bulletin, PAGASA said Ramon is expected to make landfall over Babuyan Islands between the afternoon and evening of Tuesday.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 was raised over the northern portion of Cagayan:

  • Santa Praxedes
  • Claveria
  • Sanchez Mira
  • Pamplona
  • Abulug
  • Ballesteros
  • Aparri
  • Calayan
  • Camalaniugan
  • Buguey
  • Santa Teresita
  • Gonzaga
  • Santa Ana

 

Meanwhile, TCWS No. 2 was hoisted over the following parts of Luzon:

  • Batanes
  • Apayao
  • Kalinga
  • Abra
  • Ilocos Norte
  • Ilocos Sur
  • the rest of Cagayan

 

TCWS No. 1 was also raised over the northern portion of Isabela, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ifugao La Union, and Pangasinan.

Moderate with frequent heavy rains are expected over Batanes, the northern portion of Cagayan including the Babuyan Islands, Apayao and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte.

Light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains will be experienced over the northern portion of Isabela, Kalinga, Abra and the rest of Cagayan and Ilocos Sur, according to PAGASA.

The weather bureau noted that Ramon, due to the land interaction and the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan), is seen to weaken after making landfall.

On Wednesday, light to moderate with occasional heavy rains are expected over Batanes, northern and eastern portions of Cagayan including the Babuyan Islands, eastern portion of Isabela, Apayao and Kalinga.

Meanwhile, light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains will be experienced over the northern portion of Aurora and the rest of Cagayan and Isabela, PAGASA added.

 

At 10 a.m., Ramon was located at 120 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan with winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 165 kph, almost stationary. 

“By tomorrow morning, nasa 145 km west northwest na siya ng Dagupan City. Pagdating ng Thursday ito ay lalabas na ng Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR),” said PAGASA weather specialist Raymond Ordinario in a press briefing.

PAGASA is also monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) located at 810 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar as of 10:00 a.m. It is expected to intensify into a tropical depression within 24 hours.

The next severe weather bulletin will be issued at 2 p.m.

Classes, evacuations

Classes for Tuesday were canceled in Cagayan and other areas. 

Power went out in Santa Ana in Cagayan on Monday night amid the onslaught of Typhoon Ramon. Strong winds were being felt, especially in coastal barangays, according to a report on GMA News' Unang Balita by Jun Veneracion. 

More than 3,000 people have so far been affected in Regions II and V due to Typhoon Ramon, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday. 

Latest data from the NDRRMC indicated that 848 families or 3,479 persons in 46 barangays in Regions II and V have been affected. Of that number, 290 families or 1,059 individuals are taking temporary shelter in 20 evacuation centers. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
