Death toll among Taal volcano evacuees climbs to 4

Two more evacuees who fled their homes due to the unrest of the Taal Volcano have died, according to a Monday report on GMA News' Saksi by Jonathan Andal.

One evacuee from Cuenca, Batangas died in a vehicular accident in Quezon province.

The fatality, identified as Larry Montalvo, was aboard a motorcycle with his wife and grandchild when they slammed into a bus.

The bus driver is now in police custody and has vowed to provide aid to the family of the victim.

Meanwhile, Benny Mendoza died in a Batangas evacuation center due to cardiac arrest.

Felina de Roxas, 57, passed away last Saturday also due to a heart attack.

Seventy-two-year-old Zenaida Ortilla from Talisay, Batangas, died early Monday morning. A diabetic and a stroke patient, her condition was aggravated by the living condition in the evacuation center.

“Siyempre siksikan. Dapat maluwag. Malalanghap mo iba ibang amoy. Nai-stress, nakadagdag sa kalagayan rin ang usap-usap sa bulkan,” one of Ortilla’s relatives said.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), over 112,000 evacuees from Batangas, Quezon, Laguna, and Cavite are currently taking shelter in 416 evacuation centers. — Julia Mari Ornedo/BAP, GMA News
