Lahar triggered by Rolly buries houses in Guinobatan, Albay

Super Typhoon Rolly (international name: Goni) triggered lahar mudflows on Sunday, burying an estimated 300 houses in Barangay San Francisco, Guinobatan, Albay.

Some houses were two-thirds buried in lahar from Mayon Volcano, as seen in photos shared by Ako Bicol Representative Zaldy Co.

Co said more than 300 houses were affected.

Some houses in Barangay Travesia were also submerged under lahar on Sunday.

The Office of Civil Defense Region V on Sunday night said 10 people died in the Bicol Region. Of this number, nine of the fatalities were from Albay and one from Catanduanes.

Of the nine fatalities in Albay, three are from Guinobatan including a 5-year-old child.

Three individuals were reported missing in Guinobatan, the OCD V said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a warning on Oct. 31 that due to potentially high-volume rainfall, lahar and muddy streamflows from three active volcanoes may be expected in several areas along the path of Rolly.

Rolly has weakened into a tropical storm and was traversing the West Philippine Sea on Monday morning. —KG, GMA News
