Comet Neowise shines over Mt. Mayon's perfect cone

A YouScooper managed to capture the luminance of comet Neowise and the silhouette of Mt. Mayon in a beautiful photo.

The "once-in-a-lifetime" shot was taken by John Cidric Santillan from Rawis, Legazpi City on Monday (July 20) evening.

Comet Neowise, which has a luminous tail that can be seen from the naked eye, will not be back for another 7000 years.

Santillan, who prayed for clear skies and waited day and night just to take a photo, said it was all worth it in the end.

"Masaya na akong nakunan 'yung comet. Talagang once in a lifetime shot!" he told GMA News.

Comet Neowise was discovered on March 27, 2020, by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) spacecraft as the comet was headed toward the Sun.

According to information posted on the NASA website, the icy visitor has a nucleus measuring roughly 5 kilometers in diameter, and its dust and ion tails stretch hundreds of thousands to millions of kilometers while pointing away from the Sun.

NASA had said it would make its closest approach to Earth on July 22, passing at a harmless distance of 103 million kilometers.

Earlier this month, Comet Neowise was spotted lighting up the Rizal sky. Last weekend, it was seen over Odiongan, Romblon— Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
