Siri now works on some non-iPhone 4 devices

Thanks to a jailbreak package from a developer, owners of Apple devices running iOS 5 other than the iPhone 4S can now use Siri, the iPhone 4S' voice-activated assistant , to take dictation.

Developer Eric Day said his package, "Siri0us," does not require iPhone 4S keys or files to run on Apple's iOS 5 devices, enthusiast site iDownloadBlog reported.

"Dictation works great on the iPhone 4, transcribing words into text rather quickly. The technology is actually Naunce-based dictation, but the end result is pretty much the same as Apple’s Siri," iDownloadBlog said.

The Siri0us package also works on the iPod touch 4G, the enthusiast site added.

But it also noted small ads are displayed in the bar above the mic icon, and an Internet connection is needed for the microphone to show up.

Users who want Siri Dictation running on jailbroken iDevices can add http://apt.if0rce.com to their list of Cydia sources and search for “Siri0us.”

Meanwhile, iDownloadBlog said the developer has noted a bug that some may run into when trying to install.

"If your iDevice keeps respringing, do not restore! Use a SSH tool to remove the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AssistantServices.framework file," it said.

iDownloadBlog noted Siri does not technically require the new A5 processor and increased memory in the iPhone 4S.

"Several readers have tipped us that this does indeed work on the iPhone 3GS," it added. — TJD, GMA News
