New P2P stealth botnet in the works

A new peer-to-peer (p2p) botnet, this time with extra stealth capabilities, is in the works and may soon go on sale, a hacker news site reported this week.

The Hacker News said the new botnet developed by “TheGrimReap3r” is decentralized, making it “very difficult to shut down” or even track where its commands are coming from.

Codenamed “Thor,” the botnet uses DLL injection, IAT hooking, and ring3 rootkit among other methods to hide, The Hacker News said.

“One more interesting feature that (it has its) own module system so you can write your own modules with (its) easy API system. It includes peer-to-peer communication uses 256-AES encryption with random key generation at each startup,” it added.

The “Thor” botnet can works on Window 2000, XP even with service packs, Windws Vista, and Windows 7 – both 32- and 64-bit systems, it noted.

According to The Hacker News, the developers of “Thor” may sell the botnet in the underground market and various hacking forums at $8,000.

Modules that may be bought include an advanced botkiller, DDoS, formgrabber, keylogger/password stealer and mass mailer. — TJD, GMA News
