Opera releases new Android browser
After losing much share to its competitors, Norwegian browser maker Opera released its latest product for Google’s Android platform, beefing it up with support for new technologies.
Opera added camera, HTML5 and 3D graphics support to its Opera Mini 7 browser, in an apparent bid to get back some lost share of the browser usage pie, TechCrunch reported.
“New features include the ability to create an unlimited number of bookmarks (‘Speed Dials’) to quickly go to your favorite URLs — before there had been a limit of nine. This new version now also includes camera support, as well as better support for HTML5 sites’ functionality through its Ragnarök technology. It is also adding WebGL support, for 3D functionality. WebGL is used in the development of cross-platform games,” TechCrunch said.
It noted Android, had overtaken Opera as the world’s largest mobile browser.
“Ironically, the most up-to-date figures from StatCounter, the company that said Android had overtaken Opera, show that, in fact, Opera is back on top over Android as the world’s most popular browser. The fact that the rankings change so frequently point to how important it is to keep innovating on features to keep users loyal,” it added.
TechCrunch noted Opera had hinted at a new version of the browser in February, when it announced deals to further its reach in the area of mobile payments.
Opera had been known for innovating and making products that work across several feature phone and smartphone platforms.
But with Android now being the biggest smartphone platform, Opera needed to update and go one step further than it had before.
TechCrunch said Opera claimed to take its page compression technology for the Mini browser one step further, compressing web pages up to 90 percent. — TJD, GMA News
