Google Maps downloaded more than 10M times in 1st 48 hours

How did iPhone users welcome back Google Maps into their devices after an absence of several months?

Very warmly, if figures claimed by Google are to be believed: more than 10 million downloads in the first 48 hours of its release.

"We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years," Google's Jeff Huber said in a post on his Google+ account.

He said iPhone users who wish to download the app can get it on the App Store.

But he also urged those who already have the new app to "please tell a friend."

Google Maps was booted out of Apple's iOS platform when Apple introduced its iOS 6, but made a triumphant return this month.

The path to Google Maps' return was paved by criticism of Apple's glitch-ridden iOS 6 Maps solution, which comes pre-installed on its iOS 6 operating system.

Google said the app's features include:

  • Find addresses, places and businesses around the world with Google local search;
  • Discover places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and local reviews;
  • Sign in to sync your searches, directions, and favorite places between your computer and your phone;
  • Voice guided, turn-by-turn driving directions;
  • Find your way by train, bus, subway or walking directions; and
  • Access live traffic information in cities across the world.

Also, Google said its Street View and imagery allow 360-degree panoramas of places around the globe, along with high-resolution satellite imagery of locations around the world.

It also offered a new streamlined interface for even easier navigation, and support for gestures to explore the map and browse results. — RSJ, GMA News
