Looking for a taxi in Metro Manila? There's an app for that

Looking for a decent taxi in the metropolis without having to line up at a taxi stand or call a cab company? If you have a smartphone or tablet, there's an app for that.

 

New apps being developed in the Philippines now allow smartphone and tablet owners to hail a taxi with Internet-based apps, according to a GMA News report by Cedric Castillo.

 

One such app, GrabTaxi, allows smartphone or tablet users to virtually hail a cab and specify his or her current location.

 

If a cab whose company uses the app is available and responds to the cyber-summons, the app provides the rider with details such as the cab's name and plate number, as well as the driver's name.

 

The app even gives information on the approximate fare.

 

Natasha Bautista, marketing vice president of Grabtaxi, said the system saves time for both the passenger and the driver.

 

"Because of this system wala na ang paikot-ikot, wala nang idle time sa mall. It saves them time, energy and a lot of money (Because of this system, there is no time or money lost. Drivers don't have to drive around at malls waiting for passengers)," she said.

 

Even taxi fleets using the app can expect benefits, the report said.

 

"The advantage is that it's more accurate. Sa radio hindi namin alam sino ang pinakamalapit," said Margie Rodriguez, an official at a cab company.

Booking fee

Using the app to hail a cab, however, may cost the passenger an extra P70 booking fee.

On its FAQ page, GrabTaxi explained the booking fee:

"The reason for a booking fee is for drivers to be able to cover their expense in going to where you are. Remember, drivers only start their meters once you're inside the taxi. In addition, we provide you speed, certainty, and safety. We will provide you the best taxi booking service in Manila and we promise to continuously serve you better every time."
