An HTC Hello Kitty smartphone?

What do you get the cat who seems to already have everything? A smartphone, of course.

Taiwan-based HTC is coming up with a five-inch "Hello Kitty" variant of its Butterfly S phone, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported late Tuesday.

"HTC confirmed that it will launch the phone along with EVA Air, which has run Hello Kitty-themed flights since October 2011 on several routes, primarily between Taoyuan and Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Guam," it said.

It added the HTC Butterfly S had gone on sale in Taiwan in June, for NT$22,900 (US$765).

The CNA report noted HTC has been focusing on marketing after its sales momentum slowed in the last two months.

Limited edition

A separate article on PhoneArena.com quoted a Taiwan-based source that said only 3,100 "Hello Kitty" units will be available.

It said the phone "is being offered by the Taiwan-based manufacturer in conjunction with (Taiwan carrier) Eva Air."

"The phone is available in white, not the pink that is part of the Hello Kitty color scheme. The Hello Kitty character will be printed on both the front and back of the phone," it added.

Specs

PhoneArena.com said the "Hello Kitty" phone may have the same specs as the regular Butterfly S, but with "Hello Kitty" wallpaper and games.

It said the Butterfly S has a 5-inch Super LCD 3 display with 1080 x 1920 (FHD) resolution.

Powering it will be a quad-core 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 CPU, along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of native storage plus a 64GB capacity microSD slot.

It will also have an UltraPixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture, which can capture video in 1080 x 1920 resolution.

There is a 2.1MP camera in the front for selfies and video chats, it added.

"Android 4.1 will be pre-installed out of the box along with Sense 5.0 UI. That means you'll see Project Butter, Google Now and actionable notifications along with BlinkFeed and Beats Audio," it added. — TJD, GMA News
