Pinoys grand champions in int'l programming contest

A team of young professionals did the Philippines proud after bagging $20,000 in prizes and earning the distinction of grand champions in the 2014 Trend Micro Codinsanity Asia Pacific Programming Contest in Taiwan.

The Philippines' Team Liadri bested nine other finalists from China, Japan, and Taiwan, after four rounds of preliminary online eliminations and the 24-hour final round in Taiwan.

In the final round, contestants had to find solutions for algorithmic problems related to Big Data.

Eva Chen, CEO and Co-founder of Trend Micro, noted Big Data has become a focus of technology development in the cloud era, with applications in business, economics, and other disciplines.

“Responding to this trend, we are taking advantage of the opportunities offered by cloud computing and opening up possibilities for technology development, by fostering young international talent and honing their skills in creatively solving big data problems,” Chen said.

Liadri includes Tim Dumol, Joan Magno, Kevin Atienza, and John Ayson from Makati-based startup company Kalibrr.

It showed outstanding technical skills, high level of completion, innovation, and unwavering composure on the finals stage.

The team's solution was comprehensive in technical and business applications, earning it praise from the judges.

Trend Micro offered $50,000 in prizes for the top winners. The champions received $20,000, while the first and second runners-up received $10,000 and $6,000, respectively.

Other finalists also received $2,000 in prizes.

First time

For the first time, the programming contest was opened to students and working professionals in 12 regions around Asia, including India, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Trend Micro said this attracted a record-high 422 teams joining the contest.

In the finals, Team Liadri was joined by fellow Philippine representatives Team UPPG composed of students from University of the Philippines Diliman.

Jenny Chang, Chief Culture Officer and Co-founder of Trend Micro, said they are creating an international arena for contestants to compete and learn from each other.

“In a globalized era, we will continue to offer platforms such as Codinsanity for international exchange among young talent to spur innovation, and take the software industry to the next level,” Chang said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
