Google boosts security for iOS devices at work

Apple mobile devices like iPhones and iPads - including the newly released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus—are getting an extra layer of security in the workplace, as Google rolled out a new Sync for Google Apps solution.
Google for Work product manager Clayton Jones said iOS Sync for Google Apps gives an iOS user and his or her company increased security to protect files, emails, and documents.
"iOS Sync is integrated right into the Gmail and Google Drive apps for iOS, so you don’t have to take any action to download an additional app. And iOS Sync will support iOS 7, 8 and, of course, the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus," Jones said in a blog post.
He said the security measures include:
- manage Google Apps by setting a policy prompting employees to enroll their device when they log into Google Apps such as Google Drive and Gmail
- configure WiFi networks by distributing WiFi passwords and certificates to employees so they can easily connect to trusted networks
- support for existing policies
Jones said iOS Sync will be available for Google Apps for Work, Google Apps for Education and Google Apps for Government beginning next week.
He said administrators should go to the Admin console to activate the new functions.
A separate article on tech site The Verge noted Google had rolled out a similar feature for Android last June. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
